Training

Training on Cross Cultural Working with Domestic Violence Perpetrators

21st September 2010 - London Bridge

Course aims:

1. To explore what is meant by "culture" and what we mean by our own cultural identity

2. To identify how culture and domestic violence are connected, for us and for our clients

3. To explore the relationship between culture and other factors influencing clients' use and justifications for domestic violence

4. To explore participants' concerns and difficulties in working cross culturally in domestic violence intervention work

5. To identify how culture can be used as an excuse for domestic violence, by clients, their partners and others, and the challenges this presents to practitioners, including the potential to collude with woman blaming unintentionally

6. To explore ways of supporting clients to maintain a sense of cultural identity whilst choosing to change those ways of behaving which are dangerous or abusive to others

7. To develop clear routes of working with clients in ways which respect their right to cultural identity and also challenge expressions of culture as justifications for abuse

8. To practice ways of working with these complexities in our clients' lives

9. To use experiential learning as a method of exploring the subject and of practicing some ways of working
